Before We Begin:

If this is the first attempt at opening a lens then I suggest that you read my previous posts regarding screws & driversgrease and other things. Also read regarding the tools that you will need in order to fix your Nikkors.
I highly suggest that you read these primers before you begin (for beginners):
Reading these primers should lessen the chance of ruining your lens if you are a beginner. Also before opening up any lens, always look for other people who have done so in Youtube and the internet. Information is scarce, vague and scattered (that is why I started this) but you can still find some information if you search carefully.
I highly recommend that you also read my working with helicoids post because this is very important and getting it wrong can ruin your day. If I can force you to read this, I would. It is that important!
For more advanced topics, you can read my fungus removal post as a start. This post has a lot of useful information here and there and it will be beneficial for you to read this ...

Official Nikon Hacks, D7000, D7100, D3100, D3200, D5100, V1, V2, J1, D4, D800 and Nikon Tool

... when taking a picture in LV the sequence is: 0. (mirror is already up, the aperture is already stopped down.) 1. shutter closes (second curtain travels down)
  1. aperture opens all the way (like you have taken a shot and you need to look in the OVF between shots) - now the shutter is re-cocked
  2. aperture closes back down. (now it will close at the value set previously when in LV)
  3. shutter opens and closes.
  4. aperture opens all the way back up (again)
  5. aperture closes back down.
  6. shutter opens, live view resumes.
the only Nikons that can vary the aperture in live view are the Nikon D3 family; the brand new D4 and D800. These more expensive cameras have a separate electromagnetic actuator for the mechanical lever.
on the D7000 this is not a software lock, it is a mechanical limitation...

...only d3´s , d4´s and the d800 got gifted by nikon with a relatively expensive electromagnetic high speed precision actuator and a redesigned mirrorbox which r&d costs are partly reflecting in the prices of these units...

Repair Fundamentals Lens & Camera

Repair Fundamentals Lens & Camera

These were made in order to show people what are the important tools and practices for repairing cameras and lenses. If you are new to this, I advise that you read every article. I wrote this so that newcomers will not be frustrated because there is almost nothing on the internet on these topics.

Lens Repair Articles

Lens Repair Articles:

Here is the core of my blog. I intend to have the most comprehensive database found on the internet for everything related to the repair of classic Nikkor lenses. As of this date, I believe that this blog is the only one of its kind and I currently have the most articles on this subject. I wrote these to prevent people from making mistakes while repairing their own lenses. The articles contain a brief history of the highlighted lens as well as plenty of sample pictures taken with it. I do update each article occasionally so please check on the facebook page named Classic Nikon Maintenance to see if I updated anything.

General Repair

Camera Repair & General Repair Articles:

Here are my articles pertaining to general camera repair and some DIY articles for lenses or anything related to them. Just like the lens repair articles these will also be updated on an occasional basis. Please check them out, many things here are exclusive to this blog.

5) IF THE NOZZLE CHECK IS MISSING IN THE SAME PLACE EACH TIME
In our experience, if your nozzle check is missing in the same place each time, the print head itself is at fault and the likely cause is ink that has dried outside the print head. If your nozzle check is variable, the likely cause is that air is entering the ink system, usually due to the cartridge failing to make an air-tight seal with the printer. Although often air can enter through internal splits in the ink lines, damper or connections. So if you have a variable nozzle check, we advise changing the suspect cartridge(s). If your nozzle check is missing in the same places each time, read on...

Part seven: print head clogging

A kind reader recently wrote to suggest an ingenious solution to the Epson 4880 printer head clogging. It is very simple: all you have to do is pour about one cup of plain tap water into the maintenance tank every four months or so. Evidently, the print head parks over the maintenance tank and the key to stop clogging is to keep it from drying out. Waste ink was supposed to do that, but in dry environments or with infrequent printing it is insufficient, and clogging quickly becomes a major issue. Adding water into the maintenance tank provides sufficient liquid to continue evaporating over a longer period of time. According to the reader, this was advised by an Epson engineer.

The life of the maintenance tank is not shortened by adding water because the chip/computer does not know you did so; also, the water evaporates over time, which is what keeps the print head moist and clog free. Naturally, you need to use judgment when adding water, i.e. you should not overflow it. The worst that can happen, though, is that you create a bit of a mess.

I first poured tap water into the maintenance tank in early November 2014, thinking that I would observe how this would work over a longer period of time. Frankly, I was somewhat skeptical at first and did not see any noticeable changes right away; with hindsight, it apparently took some time for the water to evaporate and start providing a more humid micro environment. After a couple of weeks and a number of head cleaning cycles, however, things decidedly turned for the better: I mostly have not experienced head clogging since then, largely regardless of how often I print and how much printing I do in one go.

This may not necessarily work for other printer models, nor may it be a panacea for print head clogging, but the approach is definitely worth exploring.

error - Nikon D90 mirror stuck

Nikons from that era (D40, D50, D90, etc) have a couple of things that are fairly well known to cause the dreaded 'Shutter Error" and/or locked up mirror.

The first is that the main drive wheel for the shutter/mirror cocking mechanism is dirty or needs lubrication. This wheel can be accessed on many Nikon cameras by removing the floor plate of the camera. It's the red wheel visible through a cutout in the metal chassis. A drop or two of grease (I prefer white lithium) applied to the wheel with a toothpick should do the trick. You want a fairly thick lubricant for this wheel, but just a tiny dab will do. Spread it around evenly over the entire circle of the wheel. (Please note: WD40 is NOT a lubricant. It is a penetrating cleaner and water dispersant.) DO NOT spray grease from a can directly into your camera - it can get in a lot of places you don't want it to go! This video shows how to do the same thing with a D40, but most of the Dx0 models from that time are very similar. (Note: he uses spray directly, but I do not recommend doing so!)

The other problem area is also one that just needs a bit of lubrication but is in an area harder to access. Disassembling the camera to access the area is probably beyond all but the most capable do-it-yourselfers. But there is a trick to getting a drop of machine oil where it needs to be without taking anything apart. Use a straightened paper clip to place one tiny drop of oil on the post that is the pivot around which the shutter and mirror cocking mechanisms rotate. Here is an "exploded" diagram of the area. #208 is the aperture control lever that is visible when your lens is removed.

mirror box diagram

And here is how you reach it without taking anything apart.

Aperture linkage lever

GENTLY pull the aperture linkage lever (indicated by the blue arrow) down and hold it while inserting a straightened paper clip with a drop of mineral oil on the end into the area marked by the blue arrow and place the drop on the point where the other end of the aperture lever pivots. I use sewing machine oil for this one. If the camera is held in portrait orientation with the shutter button end up, the oil will lubricate the post that both the shutter and mirror cocking mechanisms also pivot, as they are all in there very close together. The aperture lever is spring-loaded, and you don't want to let it slip out from under your finger and bounce back unimpeded. That could allow the spring to become unseated and then the camera will need to be disassembled to be repaired!

After you've oiled and lubed your camera, cycle the shutter a few times to spread it around a little. If it tests OK you're good to go. If you're still getting the error or stuck mirror, then it's probably time for a trip to a repair shop/service center or, if the cost would be as much or more than the camera is worth, time for another camera.
